‘This, then, is how you should pray:
‘“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,” Matt 6:9
Samuel wasn’t paying attention
When God wanted to speak to young Samuel for the first time He called him three times. Each time Samuel thought it can only be Eli calling. 1 Samuel 3: 8-10, 8 A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” God now begins to speak to Samuel once He had his attention.
Later on God didn’t need to get Samuel’s attention before speaking to him. “The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 1 Samuel 16:1. They were on speaking terms.
Before Talking to God get his attention
“Father in heaven” needs to be said like someone dialling a telephone number. You wait for the ring tone to change to a voice on the other end before you proceed to speak. You don’t hold a conversation with a dialling tone. Only with a live person on the other end of the line.
As Eli told Samuel to say: Speak, for your servant is listening, so God also says: Speak, son (daughter), for your Father is listening.
In the garden of Gethsamane Jesus prayed for an hour on three occasions. He prayed as if He was looking for a dialogue, to get a feed-back. Mt 26:42-44, 42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.” Jesus kept saying the same thing because the Father gave Him no answer. He was ringing but God didn’t pick up.
Missionary to India, John Hyde, used to called on the Father several times in his prayers. He would just keep calling, “Father, Father”, for up to 15 minutes at times, until he felt the Father is on the other side of the line.
God called Moses to come up to the Mount but he had to wait before he was invited in to the throne room. “ When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud.” Exo 24:15-16
Our prayers for a move of God will only be answered if we know how to enter into the Holy of Holies. The Holy Spirit will let you know when you have ‘prayed through’. But if you never leave His pres
